A Farewell Poem

Though this farewell has been almost three years in the making, it always seems to rush upon us.

I wrote this poem around a year ago to express the grief I’ve held in saying good-bye to Kansas and all of the family, friends and memories it holds dearly.

I share it now as departure nears in hopes it meaningfully conveys the deep love and gratitude I have for this place and this people.

My first year in Kansas, down by the river (2010)

When We Return

The storm clouds roll in
With enough thunder
To fill the town with Wonder
More than any preacher could

Colors for miles
In the sea above
Sweet rolls for miles
In the sea below

And I hope there’s still plains and Flint Hill trains
When we return

In the Sunflower State
Time sings like the birds
And moves like the herds
Because people matter most

Stars for miles
In the sea above
Rivers for miles
In the sea below

And I hope there’s still plains and Flint Hill trains
When we return

The coffee shop where it began
The parks where it continued
The barn where we first wed
And the duplex where we continued

The home we began dreaming in
And where dreams were laid to rest
The library, the pie shop, hardware stores
And timeless Sunday best

The bike rides ‘long brown rivers
And the flower-full garden strolls
Family and friends from east to west
Long talks on ‘crete patios

And I hope there’s still plains and Flint Hill trains
When we return, “home”.

Moving: Prayer Priorities

If you are in or near the Wichita area and would like to join friends who get together and pray for our family and mission once a month, please contact us and we’ll gladly put you in touch with the host!

There are many preparations to be made during this final month leading up to our family’s move overseas! Would you please pick one of the 4 P’s to lift up in prayer with us?

Language School Acceptance – Pray for acceptance to language school and for the acceptance letter to arrive in a timely manner. This is needed in order to apply for our visas.

Visa – Once we receive the letter of acceptance, pray for a smooth process for acquiring our visa, which will include a brief out-of-state trip.

Pray for time, energy and wisdom as we sort through and pack the remainder of our possessions and move from our rental at the end of this month.

Marriage – Pray for continued unity and for our marriage to keep strengthening during this life change.

Little One – Pray for our baby boy to continue growing in health and for a smooth as possible adjustment for him in the upcoming transitions.

Family and friends- Pray for necessary grace and grieving as we say our good-byes to one another.

Pray for a safe and smooth journey for us and our belongings and for favor with people we come in contact with during our travels.

We look forward to seeing how G works in all the details and sharing those answers to prayer with you in the near future.

Our next “Prayer Priorities” post will have requests for our beginnings in Thailand! Thank you for your care through prayer 🙂

Because He cares, Sarah Lynn

How’d We End Up Here? (And A Departure Date!)

That’s us, in front of our perfect little temporary home we call “the Hobbit house”. How’d we end up here?

Bringing our baby home – July 2017

Our journey began in response to a calling and the way we knew G had designed us to serve Him, well before we discovered such a fitted opportunity.

SUMMER & FALL – 2015

This fitted opportunity came to our knowledge two years ago. With certainty and nerves, we applied for the position as long-term media producers in Asia with ReachGlobal.

Months later, with numerous paper-work and in-person interviews behind us, we celebrated our acceptance! A short trip to Thailand solidified our position on the Serve Asia team, and after a week long training we began the faith-building work of partnership development.

Partnership development had us travel locally and to surrounding states, connecting with churches and individuals led to support G’s work in Asia.

SUMMER & FALL – 2016

During that year we also partook in an informative online and in-person training for pre-deployed overseas workers. At the same time, we packed and sold things and then to our great surprise and greater joy, found we were expecting a special little addition to our family- the very week we closed on our home!

Training in session – July, 2016

We continued partnership development with the added excitement of waiting for our sweet baby boy to arrive. During this time, Dave went back to Thailand for the biennial Asia Division Conference and then in July our little one arrived into the world!

Serving with our supervisor – February 2017

With immense support and encouragement from family and friends we are here today, in our transitional Hobbit house, recovering and adjusting well to our new parenting role, and eager to begin the work in Asia G has called us to- now as a family of three!

FALL 2017

With absolutely all credit to the Lord and to your generous prayers and support, we’re excited to announce that our planned departure date is set! On NOVEMBER 9TH we plan to depart Kansas and begin our move to Thailand.

Upon reflecting on these last two years, we see and celebrate the L’s faithfulness to us and through you- individuals, families, and communities around the U.S. who have given and continue to give your time, prayers, hospitality, and/or financial provision for the sake of gospel transformation in Asia!

Here’s to His glory through His people!

With thanksgiving, Sarah Lynn
